She smiled sweetly watching as David spooned a bunch of mashed potatoes onto his plate. She looked down at Natasha and smiled gently as the cat stood on her hind legs and propped herself up against Maddie's thigh. She shook her head and shooed the cat off of her. She handed David the greenbeans as her father passed the gravey. She just set it down infront of David if he wanted some. She wasn't much for gravey on her biscuts and mashed potatoes. Dalton had set the tray of meatloaf down next to David once he was finished.
Maddie was about to reach for her fork when he took her hand and gently squeezed it. She smiled at him and then looked back to her plate as she reached for her fork and started to eat. She glanced up to her mother and father who were looking at eachother questioningly. Her mother had that all knowing look in her eyes though. Maddie glanced at her parent's hands. Her father's was resting over her mother's and his thumb was stroking her hand gently. She smiled softly and looked back down at her plate as she continued to eat. "So, David, do you play on any of the sport teams?" Her father asked gently looking at David curiously.

David smiled as he noticed her parent's hands a moment later. He took the rest of his food in trained and well thought out quantities. His coach had told them how much of each kind of food to get. When he was finished he poured a bit of gravy onto his potatoes and meatloaf before placing it back in its place. He picked his fork up and paused mid-stab as her father asked a question, "I play on the football team, and I might be on the basketball team next year but I'm not to sure about that one."
He took a bite of meatloaf and chewed it slowly, savoring the flavors. "This is wonderful dinner Mrs. West." He took a bit of potato into his mouth and closed his eyes, "Absoloutly fantastic." His smile grew on his face as his eyes snapped open and his eyes danced humorously.

She looked to him and smiled as she ate. She looked to her father as he nodded his approval of the activities. "What position do you play on the football team?" He asked curiously looking at David. Maddie glanced up when the phone started to ring, but neither her or Dalton nor her parents got up to answer it. They weren't allowed to leave the table unless they were finished with their dinners. That was her mother's rule. If it was an important call then the answering machine could get it.
Her mother smiled and nodded her head as she took a bite of meatloaf. "Why thank you, David." She said gently once she swallowed some of her tea. Maddie looked to her mother and smiled sweetly. "Mama makes some of the best food around. You should try her southern fried chicken." She said sweetly looking to David sweetly before forking some greenbeans into her mouth gently. Dalton smirked gently at his sister then looked to his parents for a moment before he forked some mashed potatoes into his mouth.

David looked up and started to ask if they'd like him to grab it for them when he realized it was not something they did here, answering the phone during dinner. He noted that fact and relaxed again, speaking to answer the question Maddie's dad had asked, "I play starting linebacker and half-back." he said, "But that's subject to change depending upon what we need, I can play anything really, but those are my best positions."
He listened intently to Maddie, "I have absoloutly no doubt at all that she makes anything taste good. Anyone's cooking is better than my mom's, but this is equisite."

She looked at him for a moment as he talked then went back to eating a little. "That's pretty good that you're flexible with positions." He commented. Suddenly his beeper started to go off and Maddie frowned, but she didn't say anything. Her mother didn't look to pleased either when he reached to look at it. Dalton just sat there trying to ignore the same thing that happened at every meal just about. Maddie just kept eating but she looked up at her father when he stood to go to the phone. She looked back to David and gave him an apologetic look before she started to just poke at her food for a moment.
"Why thank you David." Her mother said noting her daughters displeased disposition then looked to David. "But surely your mother isn't that bad a cook." She said gently as she took a bit of her mashed potatoes.

David smiled, "Oh, trust me, you should never eat at my place when she's visiting. She always insists on cooking and I can hardly eat it. That's saying something because I love to eat." He smiled at Maddie and took another bite of meatloaf with a heavy coating of mashed potatoes glorped onto it. He suddenly realized he'd let slip 'visiting'. He hoped her parents wouldn't mind that he didn't live with his parents anymore. He'd moved out just recently, unable to cope with the stress of his father's job and his mother's constant cleaning to keep her mind off of it.

Maddie looked to him realizeing he said visiting and she was sure that her mother and Dalton had noticed it too, but neither of them said anything. She gave him a questioning look, but she didn't say anything. She heard her father's footsteps and looked to him as he entered the dining room. "I'm sorry, ya'll but I need to go to the office and check something out. I'll be back in a bit." He said stopping behind Maddie's mother to give her a gentle kiss on the cheek. "Be careful on the road dear." Her mother said gently looking up to him. "I will be. It was nice meeting you, David." He said gently ooking over to David before he turned and headed to the front door.
Maddie watched him then looked to her mother. "May I be excused?" She asked gently setting her fork down gently. "Honey, you've hardly touched your food." Her mother said gently looking at Maddie. She understood why Maddie wanted to be excused. "I'm not hungry anymore." She said gently looking down at her food then back to her mother. "Yes, you may." She said gently watching as Maddie stood up and picked up her half full plate of food and her glass and fork and carried it into the kitchen. This wasn't an odd thing to happen. Whenever her father's beeper didn't go off it was because he was still at work. She pushed her food into the tupawear bowls that her mother had set out for when she would clean up the kitchen then she started to rinse off her plate before she would place it into the dishwasher.

David sighed as Maddie's father walked out the door and stood as she left the table. He didn't follow her immediately into the kitchen, but sat back down at the table looking after her. He looked back at her mother and gave a grimace, "I understand how you guys feel. My dad is the same way. May I go comfort her? She seems upset?" Without waiting for an answer, he picked up his plate and walked into the kitchen. He put the plate down on the counter and put his arms around her, standing behind her body, hands grasped together over her belly.
He whispered softly in her ear, rocking her slowly back and forth, "Maddie," he said, "Don't miss him and don't be angry with him. I know what it's like. In time, he'll realize what he's missing here at home."

She looked up to him when she heard his plate being set on the counter. She reached out for it and did the same thing with his as she had with hers and then set it in the dish washer. She turned around and wrapped her arms around him hugging him tightly. "I just wish that for one night we could all sit down and eat supper without hearing that damn beeper go off." She said gently and she nuzzled her nose against his shoulder for a moment. She pulled away a little and looked up at him then down at his chest for a moment thinking. She looked back up at him then out the kitchen window. The sun was setting which meant the stars would be out soon.
She looked back up at him and smiled weakly. "I want to show you something." She said sweetly as she started to lead him through the hall, up the stairs, to her bedroom. Her bedroom was pink and on one wall were black polk-a-dots and at the top of the rest of the room black chinese characters boredered the top and bottom of the walls. Her bed had a comforter that was black with different shades pink swirls on it and there were matching pillows and there was a pink unicorn resting on top in the middle of her pillows. Above her bed was a painting she had done in a black frame. It was a picture of her when she was about five or six and her father, who was swinging her around in their front yard. She lead him over to a set of bay windows and opened the big one in the middle then opened the bench in front of the bay windows and pulled out a blanket then led him out the window onto the roof. She looked up to him then out to the sun that had nearly set. She looked to the sky to see the first few stars appearing.

David smiled as he followed her through her bedroom and onto the roof of the house. He wiggled his eyebrows teasingly at her and laughed a bit, then turned back to the sky. He loved watching the stars appear at night, he could see them well from the place he usually stayed. It was always a great time to just lay outside and watch the moon wake up and bring it's friends out for a party.
"Twinkle twinkle." he said jokingly.

She looked to him and giggled softly. She sat down and pulled on his hand to gesture him to sit down next to her. She looked up to the sky as it began to get darker and more of the stars started to appear. "This is where I normally look for inspiration." She said gently looking to him then back to the sky. He had shown her what inspired him so now she wanted to show him what inspired her the most. "A lot of times when I'm upset with Daddy for walking out on us during supper I come up here to think." She said gently looking to David.

David smiled and put his arm around her waist, pulling her into him as he stretched his legs out and lay back on the blanket, "How often does he run off like this?" he asked softly, his voice gentle and comforting. He could smell the scent of watermint from a nearby pond and the mix of theirs stirring into it. His of lemongrass and a football field, hers of lemongrass and vanilla. He breathed in deeply, sour mixing with sweet in midair. He rested his lips on her hair for a moment, allowing his free hand to brush against it softly and smoothly.

She sighed softly and looked to him as they laid back onto the blanket. She looked up at the sky frowning. "Just about every night, and if the beeper doesn't go off at supper it's because, a) he never came home until later, or b) it went off earlier and he had to go to the office." She said gently as she laid her head down looking up at the stars. She looked to David for a moment taking in the soft scents that assaulted her nose. She smelled his scent the most though. She turned onto her side and cuddled up to him as her violet eyes looked out at the stars.

David nodded at her words and sharply but silently took a breath in as she cuddled against him. He relaxed quickly though and hugged her tightly to him. He wished and hoped that no one would come looking for them, he didn't want to move from here. He didn't speak for a long while, then with a suddenly urgent question, he turned her toward him and lifted her chin up to face him, "Maddie," he said, "Do you trust me?" he asked quietly.

She took a deep breath asighed happily as she closed her eyes and rested her head on his chest. She felt him lift her chin towards him. She looked him in the eyes and seemed a little confused. "That depends on what you're about to do." She said gently looking at him questioningly. She could sense the urgency in him to have asked the question and it was making her rather curious as to what he was about to do.
